Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the most popular game parks in Uganda and in east Africa.  It is located in the western part of Uganda about 376km from Kampala. Queen Elizabeth national park is known for its variety of wildlife, most of which was killed in the Uganda-Tanzania war. The park is a true nature hub with a number of natural attractions making it a suitable option for Uganda safaris. It has volcanic features which include volcanic cones, and deep craters, it also includes the Maramagambo Forest, not to mention the various species of wildlife that reside within its borders.

Queen Elizabeth national park is home to a number of mammals and birds. It is documented to have about 95 animal species and 612 bird species. The variety is well worth a visit to the park. Animal residents of the park include; the Uganda kob, warthog, elephant, waterbuck, giant forest hog, leopards, lions and hyenas. There are topi found in Ishasha, and primate in maramagambo forest and Kyambura Gorge. The park is famous for its tree climbing lions.

The  National Park’s 612 bird species include; the martial eagle, black-rumped buttonquail, African skimmer, Chapin’s flycatcher, pink backed pelicans, white-winged warbler, papyrus canary, papyrus gonolek and so many more. The park is every birdwatchers dream.

 Game Viewing Time for Queen Elizabeth

The park is good for game viewing all year round. The dry seasons June-September and January to February is the best time to visit because the animals are near the water sources and much easier to see. The vegetation is also not as thick as it would be in the wet season. For those interested in tracking chimpanzees, this is the best time to visit.

You can also go wildlife viewing in the park during the rainy seasons of October to December and March to May. Although the tracks are slippery and quite difficult to navigate. And wildlife viewing might be interrupted by the rains.

Day 1,Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast, you will be picked up by our hospitable, experienced guide/Driver. You will then depart at 8:00am for Queen Elizabeth national park stopping at the equator for photography and proceed to Mbarara for lunch. After lunch continue with your journey arriving in time for an evening game drive where you will be able to see a number of elephants, Uganda kob, and many other animals including many bird species. It’s a little wonder that Queen Elizabeth boasts one of the highest numbers of bio-diversity in the world from the open savannah to the rain forest, dense papyrus swamps and brooding crater lakes to the vastness of Lake Edward. Overnight at Bush lodge or simba safari camp or Mweya safari lodge.

Day 2,Game Drive

Early in the morning at about 6:15, have a cup of coffee and then at about 6:30am proceed for game drive in the northern sector of the park where you shall be looking for prides of lions, the Uganda kob, warthogs, oribis, waterbucks, buffalos, spotted Hyenas, leopards and many other animals not forgetting the beautiful birds. This game drive takes 3-4 hours and then return for full breakfast at your hotel. In the afternoon, you will go for a boat cruise along the kazinga channel which is home of many hippos, buffalos, elephants that come to gallop lots of water and many birds at the shores like Great white and pink-Backed pelicans, Great long tailed cormorants, open-billed stork, African jacana, malachite and pied kingfishers are commonly seen. This cruise takes 3 hours. Overnight at Mweya safari Hostel or Bush lodge or Simba safari lodge

Day 3,Tree Climbing Lions

After early breakfast will head to the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National park in search of the tree climbing lions. These lions climb the trees for a number of reasons like having better views where they can go hunting. The game drive in this sector can take the whole day so you will be leaving with packed lunch. You will have another game drive in the afternoon or have a nature walk along the Ishasha River then later drive back to your lodge arriving later evening. Dinner and overnight at Mweya safari lodge or Bush lodge or Simba safari lodge.

Day 4,Kyambura Gorge

After early breakfast, you proceed to Kyambura gorge for chimpanzee tracking. Kyambura is located on North-Eastern side of QENP, approximately 30 km from QENP Headquarters. Kyambura Gorge spans a distance of 16 km and links to the Kazinga Channel, which forms the northern boundary of the reserve. Village and plantations lie to the south. The reserve’s mean altitude is 1100 m.a.s.l. The total area of the reserve is 156 sq. km. Kyambura is the only place in QENP where you can see habituated chimpanzees and other types of primates including red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus, baboons and vervet monkeys. The park is also known for its variety of avian species including various falcons, the blue-headed bee-eater and the African Fin foot. Tracking chimpanzees can take 2-4hours so be prepared to walk for some time but it’s such a rewarding experience. After tracking, head back to the lodge in time for lunch and later in the afternoon go for the Crater drive with rewarding views of the craters. Dinner and overnight Mweya lodge or Bush lodge or Simba safari lodge.

Day 5,End of Safari

After breakfast, head back to Kampala or for your flight but having a lunch break in Mbarara and some shopping at the Equator. The journey will take about 7 hours
